How to Commend or File a Complaint

  • By Phone: Call the Port St. Lucie Police Department at 772-871-5000 or the Internal Affairs Section at 772-871-5106 (Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).
  • In Person: Visit Police Administration at 121 SW Port St. Lucie Blvd. Bldg. C and speak with a supervisor or Internal Affairs Investigator.
  • By Mail: Send your written commendation or complaint to the Chief of Police at 121 SW Port St. Lucie Blvd. Bldg. C, Port St. Lucie, FL 34984.

Process

Commendation Process: When you submit a commendation, the Police Chief will notify the employee and record the commendation in their personnel file. The employee may also be considered for further recognition.

Complaint Process: Complaints are assigned for investigation by the Internal Affairs Section. A thorough and impartial investigation is conducted, and you will be notified of the outcome in writing.

Possible Outcomes

  • Unfounded: No evidence to support the complaint.
  • Exonerated: The actions were lawful and proper.
  • Not Sustained: Insufficient evidence to prove or disprove the allegation.
  • Sustained: The allegation is supported by evidence.

Disciplinary Actions: If a complaint is sustained, actions range from a written reprimand to dismissal, based on severity. Officers may also face state-level sanctions from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).

If Unsatisfied: If you are not satisfied with the complaint resolution, you can contact Internal Affairs for further explanation or pursue legal action within 90 days.
